Why timing matters
Indian customs expects the bill of entry (BoE) to be filed promptly after cargo arrives so duty can be assessed and goods released. Delays block clearance and accumulate port charges.
Common consequences
- Demurrage and storage at port or CFS while BoE is pending
- Interest on duty if assessment is late
- GST input tax credit delays until BoE data appears in compliance records
- Scrutiny or penalties under customs law for habitual late filing
What to do if you are late
Contact your CHA immediately, file the BoE with corrected facts, and pay applicable charges. See our deadline after arrival article for timing rules.
